Consolidation Continues in the Funeral Industry

The largest funeral home company in the U.S., Service Corporation International,  is seeking to purchase the #2 company, Stewart Enterprises, for $1.13 billion. The deal requires approval from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. You can read the article from Reuter’s here.

For more than twenty years, the large, publicly traded companies have been purchasing independently owned funeral homes. In many instances, however, the sale goes unnoticed by people in the surrounding communities. If doing business with a locally owned funeral home is important to you, be sure to ask about ownership before finalizing any arrangements.
